Western Mongolia

The Uvs Lake Basin dominates the northern section of western Mongolia, with the Mongol Altai Nuruu forming a southern section of uplands along the border with China. Bayan-Ulgii, Mongolia’s most western aimag, is dominated by the Altai Mountains, the highest mountains in Mongolia with several peaks reaching upwards of 4300 metres. This isolated area has preserved the language, culture, and traditions of the Kazakhs and provides some of the most spectacular scenery in Mongolia. Approximately ninety percent of the population of Bayan-Ulgii is Kazakh and we will encounter many local nomads and discover the unique culture of this, Mongolia’s largest ethnic minority....
