In 1220 Genghis Khan decided to build the capital city of his vast Mongolian empire at Karakorum. Building was completed by his son, Ogedai Khan, after Genghis' death, but Karakorum served as the capital for 40 years before Kublai Khan moved it to what is now Beijing. Following the move, and the subsequent collapse of the Mongolian empire, Karakorum was abandoned. Whatever was left was used to help build the glorious Erdene Zuu monastery in the 16th century. Erdenezuu (The Hundred Treasures) was the first center of Lamaism in Mongolia...

Itinerary (VMI-MT-4)

Destinations: UB-Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dune-Karakorum-Khustai N/P-UB
Lengths: 5 nights, 6 days

Transportation: 4WD Japanese Minivan or 4WD Japanese Jeep

 

Tour itinerary

Day 1. Ulaanbaatar
Arrival in Ulaanbaatar, transfer to the hotel. City tour including Sukhbaatar square a central point of Ulaanbaatar, Zaisan hill with panoramic view of whole city and Gandan monastery, the largest monastery in the country. After lunch at the restaurant in UB will be excursion to the Natural history museum where the biggest dinosaur skeletons in the world and the fossilized skeletons of dinosaurs found in Gobi Desert are kept intact. Welcome dinner in one of the finest restaurants in UB. Overnight in hotel.

Day 2. Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dune
Drive 280 km to Elsen Tasarkhai sand dune, a unique area combining forest, Gobi sand dunes and rocky mountains. Excursion to Hugnu Khaan Mountain and sand dune on the steppe. Free time for hiking and walking in the near. Overnight in ger at tourist camp.

Day 3. Ruins of 12th Century Capital City Karakorum
Drive 80 km to Karakorum, ancient capital city of Great Mongolian Empire. Visit the oldest Monastery Erdene-Zuu built in 1586, with 108 stupas. Lunch at the tourist camp. Look around little town Karakorum and see historical towel on the hill.  Overnight in ger at tourist camp.

Day 4. Khustai Hill
Drive to Khustai Nature Reserve to see the Przewalski wild horses, recently re-introduced back to Mongolia. Visit the local information center for learn about the history of the last pure wild horses and the history of the area. Overnight in ger at tourist camp.

Day 5. Ulaanbaatar
Drive back to Ulaanbaatar. Lunch at the restaurant in UB. After lunch visit the Bogd Khan Palace Museum and the National history museum. In the evening, enjoy a performance of  Mongolian folk art. Overnight in hotel.

Day 6. Departure
After breakfast transfer to departure
